1. Renewable Energy Technologies

NC is involved in the projects related to renewable/alternate energy. Work has been carried out in solar water pumping, solar home electrification in villages, solar space heating, industrial and residential water heating and gasifier development to name a few. The details are given below:

Solar Dryer

Hybrid Solar Dryer is very effective, inexpensive, and quick method of drying fruits and vegetables. Hybrid solar drying systems utilize Electrical Energy to supplement solar dryers and thereby eliminating or reducing the weather dependence of solar only drying systems.

Solar Water Heating for Industrial Application:

Among all renewable energy sources, solar radiation available in great abundance is the most promising future source of energy. On approaching earth, its peak value at sea level is 1 kWh/m2 amounting to 102x1012 GW per year. This value is more than 10,000 times the current total of all types of energy that the world is using today. Considering different constraints such as location and availability of land to install solar collectors, the net potentially useable energy is at least 125 times the current world energy consumption.
Solar water heating system must be used where available fraction of solar energy most matches with the load. There is a match between solar energy fraction and the load in commercial and industrial applications. The main focus of this project is to address the industrial sector where there is huge consumption of furnace oil or gas. In this regard, solar water heating system will be installed using evacuated solar collectors at Siddique Leather Factory, Lahore. The funding for this pilot project is provided by HEC. The monitoring system will also be installed including meters and temperature sensors to analyze the performance of the system and to create a model project so that this technology can be wide spread on large scales in industrial sector.

Projects Completed by NC:

• HEC has awarded Rs. 4.8M to EME College for implementing a Solar Industrial Water Heating System in the industry. This grant is under the university-industry partnership program. NUST Consulting will provide project management services on this project.
• NUST’s constituent bodies NUST Consulting and Institute of Environmental Engineering and Science in collaboration with SEI of USA win a US 140,000 grant from USAID/MoST to install solar water pumps in 5 villages in FATA.
• Winrock International, a US based non-profit organization managing the South Asia Regional Initiative for Energy (SARI/Energy) Small Grants Program under a grant from USAID has awarded a grant of US $18,835 to NUST Consulting for installing solar home lighting in all homes in a village in Balochistan. It also includes installation of a solar water pumping system on the village well.
• First batch of Hospital Systems Management Professional Diploma was launched on 17th January, 2007. 13th batch of HR Management Professional Diploma commenced on 29th December 2007 and 7th batch of Software Quality Management started on 22nd January 2007.
